We help our clients manage their most challenging radioactive waste issues
We help our clients manage their most challenging radioactive waste issues In business since 1979, WMG has successfully completed well over 1,000 projects related to the management of radioactive materials in the commercial sector that includes all of the operating nuclear power plants. WMG D&D project work has supported every commercial project to date since Shoreham in 1994. WMG is considered the waste management leader within the commercial nuclear power industry and has set the standards for current commercial methods and practices. WMG has successfully used its extensive commercial expertise to support a wide range of DOE and DOD projects related to low level radioactive waste, TRU waste, spent fuel and D&D.
Current Projects
Palo Verde Units 1, 2 & 3 (Doosan)
Designing container(s) for transport by ocean vessel and truck of the new intact reactor heads from Korea to the Palo Verde Site. Included with the design are provisions for lifting and downending plans and devices using two 400 ton cranes at the Doosan fabrication facility and to be compatible with lifting and upending schemes at the plant site. WMG will be providing procedures and technical oversight for packaging and transport operations. Weight of package is 181 tons.
South Texas Project Units 1 & 2 (Westinghouse)
Characterizing RPV heads and providing input into mausoleum design. Designing, fabricating and supplying storage containers for intact RVHs. Developing packaging procedures and providing technical oversight during packaging, and on-site transport.
DC Cook Units 1 & 2(EnergySolutions)
Characterizing RPV heads. Designing, fabricating and installing shielded containers for truck transport of RPV head without CRDMs. RPV head package portions will be installed in containment for intact transfer to the CRDM removal location outside of containment. Designing, fabricating and supervising the loading of shielded CRDM packages.
Diablo Canyon (PGE)
Characterizing Steam Generators (SGs). Performing both preliminary and final characterization during N-1 and replacement outages. We will be providing survey protocols, and performing characterization from which temporary shielding and interim packaging will be designed.

Past Projects
University of Michigan - CH2M Hill (2007)
Performed on-site decommissioning and waste management for the decommissioning of the Ford Reactor Facility. Characterized irradiated reactor components, developed characterization and waste management plans. Supervised waste packaging, loading and transportation of all wastes removed. Developed shipment documentation, and provided interface with regulators.

Comanche Peak - Curtiss-Wright (2007)
Designed, fabricated and supplied a container for transport by barge and truck of the new intact reactor head. The container is convertible to an IVHTS (Intact Vessel Head Transport System) for potential packaging of the old reactor head for storage/disposal. Developed and supplied procedures and technical oversight for packaging operations. Provided characterization of RVH and steam generators under separate contract direct to the utility.

Farley Units 1 & 2 - Westinghouse (2006)
Supplied DOT exempted packaging for two RPVHs for shipment for disposal. Provided waste characterization for both RPVHs. Provided procedures and technical oversight for packaging operations. Both RPVHs shipped for disposal.

West Valley Demo Project - WVNSCO (2004)
Provided technical support for decommissioning the WVDP Vitrification facility. Initially, developed designs and plans for removal and packaging of three large components; the Melter, CFMT and MFHT tanks. Designed and permitted DOT packages for these components and provided the shielded packaging. Provided on-site technical support during component removal and packaging for transport and disposal. Provided waste characterization for all three components.

Surry Unit 2 - Dominion (2003)
Characterized RPV head. Designed shielded container for intact transport of RPV head with attached CRDM bundle and prepared generic DOT exemption request for RPV heads-the first of its kind. Provided for shielded container fabrication with delivery in mid-September. Head replacement scheduled during outage in October 2003. After packaging, provided for truck transport of package to processor.

Surry Unit 1 - Dominion (2003)
Characterized RPV head. Designed shielded container for intact transport of RPV head. Provided for shielded container fabrication and packaged for disposal during last Surry 1 outage in July 2003. Arranged for truck transport and disposal at Envirocare in early August 2003.

North Anna Units 1 & 2 - Dominion (2003)
Characterized RPV heads. Designed shielded container for transport of RPV heads. Provided for shielded container fabrication and packaged for disposal during last outages in December 2002 and March 2003. Arranged for truck transport and disposal at Envirocare for both units with second unit disposed in May 2003.

Davis Besse - FirstEnergy (2003)
Characterized RPV head. Designed shielded container for transport of RPV head. Provided for shielded container fabrication and packaged in late 2002. Provided for rail transport and disposal at Envirocare in August 2003.

Rancho Seco - SMUD (2003)
Performed activation analysis of reactor vessel and internals to provide basis for intact shipment of reactor vessel and removal of GTCC waste. Evaluated SAFSTOR option for decommissioning.

SONGS - Duratek (2003)
Designed and permitted reactor vessel package. Prepared DOT exemption request. Prepared drawings and specifications for package and tie-down system manufacture.
