WMG is an experienced turnkey service provider of Specialty and Specification Packages. Our engineering capabilities include design, fabrication and where required, we provide licensing and regulatory interface.

WMG supplied Specialty Packages

Nuclear Power Facilities are continuously maintaining and upgrading its overall material condition. These activities invariably result in the need to package for shipment or store large, non-standard sized power plant components. Reactor heads, coolant pumps, drive mechanisms, and heat exchangers are a few examples of the kinds of removed or replaced components that will require a Specialty or Specification Package. WMG is an experienced turnkey service provider of Specialty and Specification Packages. Our engineering capabilities include design, fabrication and where required, we provide licensing and regulatory interfacing. Components shipped or stored in WMG supplied Packages have included reactor pressure vessel heads, steam generators, control rod drives, and most recently an Auxiliary Decay Heat Exchanger.

Representative photos and a brief description for each type of Specialty Packaging are provided below.

1. Heat Exchanger Package

WMG designed, fabricated, load tested and delivered a large rectangular Type A Package for the TVA Browns Ferry ADHR Heat Exchanger.

The Heat Exchanger is a large component; it is 157-inches long by 55-inches wide by 101-inches tall weighing approximately 12 tons. This reusable Package incorporates 3-inch thick steel walls to shield the high dose rates associated with retired Heat Exchangers. The design allows for Supplemental Shielding to ensure that the final configuration is shielded below DOT limits.

2. Storage Container for Packaged Steam Dryers

WMG designed, fabricated, load tested and delivered three large, irregularly shaped Storage Containers for the segmented Grand Gulf Steam Dryer.

The Steam Dryer segments are approximately 250-inches long by 110-inches wide by 105-inches tall and can weigh as much as 20 tons. The Containers are unique because two of the four corners are rounded in order to reduce the overall weight of the packaged segments. These Containers are constructed with 2-inch thick steel walls to shield the high dose rates associated with the Steam Dryer segments. The design incorporates specialty lifting pins that do not increase any of the Container envelope dimensions.

3. Large Type A Container for DOE(Hanford Site)

WMG designed, fabricated, and delivered an ultra-large US DOT Type A Specification 7A package for containing and transporting large

DOE waste items including former transport containers thereby avoiding the schedule, dose, and cost to repackage. Super 7A exterior dimensions are 24½-foot long x 14½-foot wide and 15¾-foot high with a 30 ton payload capacity. The Super 7A is designed for truck and rail transport and requires only 4 external tie-down points.

4. Intact PWR RVH Packaging for Transport and Storage For Transport

WMG designed, fabricated, delivered, and installed DOT exempted Packaging for Intact Retired Reactor Vessel Heads (RVHs) for

transport and disposal. The Packages incorporate between 1-inch and 3-inches of steel for shielding and structure. Intact RVHs can be as large as 18-feet in diameter and approximately 28-feet in length weighing nearly 200 tons.

WMG designed, fabricated, delivered, and installed Packaging for Intact Replacement Reactor Vessel Heads (RRVHs) for transport and disposal. The Packages incorporate 1-inch of steel for structure. The packaged RRVH weighed approximately 170 tons.

For On-Site StorageOn-site storage is also a viable option for old RVHs. WMG has prepared RVHs for storage at

Palo Verde and the South Texas Project. Preparing large components for on-site storage usually involves shielding the highly radioactive sections and sealing all highly contaminated surfaces to acceptable levels for movement on-site.

5. Segmented PWR ORVH Packaging For Transport and Storage

WMG designed, fabricated and delivered packages for segmented RVHs for Maine Yankee, Davis Besse, North Anna, Surry Unit

1, D.C. Cook, and SONGS. The Packages incorporate between 1-inch and 3-inches of steel for shielding. Intact RVHs can be as large as 18-feet in diameter and approximately 10-feet tall weighing more than 100 tons.

6. PWR CEDM Type A Boxes

WMG designed, fabricated and delivered on-site storage Racks for CEDMs at D.C. Cook, STP and SONGS. WMG also fabricated and delivered

Type A shipping containers to accommodate and ship CEDM Racks off-site for each of those plants.

7.a Transnuclear (TN) Equipment Packages – TN Box

WMG designed, fabricated and delivered a Shipping Package for the Transnuclear Fuel Transfer Cask. The Package consists of a base

with saddles to accommodate the cylindrical shipping cask and a “cake-box” style Upper Section. The maximum gross weight of the loaded Package is 64 tons.

7.b Transnuclear (TN) Equipment Packages – TN Yoke Box

WMG designed, fabricated and delivered a Shipping Package for the Transnuclear Fuel Transfer Cask Lifting Yoke. The Package consists

of a base with a structure to accommodate the Lifting Yoke and a “cake-box” style Upper Section. The maximum gross weight of the loaded Package is 7.25 tons.

8. Large Containers for West Valley Site

Primary System Tank Containers

WMG developed packaging designs and plans for removal, including DOT permitting, of three large components at the West Valley Demonstration Project: the Vitrification Melter and two large tanks. WMG also provided on-site technical support during component removal and packaging for transport and disposal.

The Melter Package utilizes 6-inch thick steel walls and the loaded Package weighs approximately 180 tons. The two large Tank Packages utilize a combination of 3-inch and 6-inch steel walls and the loaded Packages weigh approximately 150 tons each.

9.Decommissioning Site Specialty Packaging

SCE – San Onofre
WMG designed and permitted the reactor vessel package, and prepared the DOT exemption

request. WMG prepared the fabrication drawings and specifications for package and tie-down system.

Connecticut Yankee

WMG designed the reactor vessel package for intact shipment and presented the design concept to the NRC and DOT. WMG prepared the DOT exemption request to transport the reactor vessel package under DOT regulations. The exemption was approved and the package was shipped off-site for disposal.
