Come meet one of our team members!
For nearly 27 years, Joe Sullivan has been an important part of the WMG team, bringing decades of experience to his role as Director of Engineering. Throughout his time with WMG, Joe has helped lead engineering efforts supporting customers across the nuclear industry while taking on a wide variety of challenging and technically demanding projects.
As Director of Engineering, Joe oversees a team responsible for analyzing the characteristics of radioactive waste and evaluating those characteristics against NRC and DOT regulatory requirements for packaging and disposal. The work spans the entire process - from determining radionuclide activity to designing and delivering DOT-compliant packaging solutions.
For Joe, one of the best parts of the job is the variety. With several interesting projects often underway at once, no two days are quite the same. That variety has kept the work engaging throughout his nearly three decades with WMG and continues to present new technical challenges for him and his team.
He is also quick to credit the people around him for making the work rewarding. When asked to describe his team, Joe said, “My team consists of world-class professionals completely dedicated to our craft. I can’t say enough good things about them.”
One area Joe particularly enjoys is working with the unique components found at nuclear power plants. Determining the radioactive characteristics of these components and then developing safe, compliant packaging solutions requires both technical expertise and creative problem-solving. It’s also the type of work he remains especially excited about as new projects arise.
Outside of WMG, Joe enjoys hiking, long walks with good friends, traveling, golf, pickleball, tennis, board games, and reading a good book - along with the occasional finely crafted cocktail. Travel is another passion, and Joe appreciates the opportunity it provides to experience new places, people, and perspectives.
After almost 30 years at WMG, Joe remains enthusiastic about the work ahead, the variety of projects that come through the engineering group, and the talented team he gets to work alongside.
And while decades of engineering experience have made Joe an expert in his field, that expertise apparently hasn’t carried over to every hobby. His fun fact? “I’m terrible at golf, but not too bad at pickleball.”
